About
About the resource
The story of Australia’s symbols is rich and colourful. Our symbols represent what is unique about the nation, reflecting different aspects of our cultural life and history.
Among our best-loved symbols are the Australian National Flag; our floral emblem, the fragrant golden wattle; the celebratory national colours of green and gold and our vibrant gemstone, the opal. The Australian National Anthem is also one of our most important national symbols.
Curriculum-aligned
Unlocking Our Stories: Australia's Symbols is a curriculum-aligned resource for Australian classrooms. The program is presented in three levels: Years 3–4, Years 5–6 and Years 7–8. The teacher guide provides curriculum alignment information with links to outcomes in all relevant key learning areas.
Engaging and interactive
The program includes three interactive lessons and an overarching story to provide an engaging context for learning. This is supported by a teacher guide and printable student activity sheets for each lesson. The story culminates in an online game. There is also an at home activity guide to support the connection between home and school.
Culturally inclusive
The program has been designed to demonstrate the rich and diverse culture of Australia. Advice is provided in the teacher guide to help support teachers in addressing cultural sensitivities.
Technical requirements
The interactive lessons work best on a tablet, computer or interactive whiteboard or screen. Accessing the program on a smartphone is not recommended. For an optimal experience, it is recommended that you use the latest version of your preferred browser software. There is no registration and no requirement for students or teachers to provide any personal information or identification.
About us
Our mission
Our mission is to improve the lives of all Australians.
Our purposes
Our work to improve the lives of all Australians is guided by 6 key purposes:
- Growing our economy, incomes and creating jobs
- Vibrant and resilient regions
- Strengthening families and communities
- Enhancing Australia’s international and national security
- Governing well
- Preparing well to respond to critical issues.
Our role
The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (PM&C) performs a unique role within the Australian Public Service (APS). Our primary role is to serve the Prime Minister, support the Cabinet and work with colleagues across the APS enterprise to deliver the Government’s priorities that help improve the lives of all Australians. We take a whole-of-government and whole-of-nation perspective to tackle problems, identify opportunities and respond quickly when decisive action is necessary. This requires a thorough understanding of the Prime Minister’s and the Government’s priorities, working closely with our APS colleagues and helping them to succeed (when they succeed, we succeed), engaging with a diverse range of stakeholders, listening to the Australian community and balancing what matters now with what will be important in the future.
